One of our favorite places in NYC to play indoor tennis is at Stadium Tennis Center at Mill Pond Park. If you haven’t heard of it there is a reason. It is located in the Bronx close to Yankee Stadium. It is a hidden gem in the Bronx we want to share with you.
Recently, we spoke with Andy Stuber, who is the Director of Stadium Tennis to learn about the history of the place that has sixteen tennis courts, twelve of which are indoors from October through April, under one of the biggest bubbles in the northeast.
Stadium Tennis has been around for quite some time and was located by the old Yankee Stadium until it was torn down. When the new one was being built, they were offered the land where Gotham Stadium Tennis has resided since 2009. Although initially, it was hard to convince the Manhattan folks to make the trip to the Bronx. Andy did some advertising but building clientele was mostly done by word of mouth which worked as once people go there, usually with low expectations, they walk away with a great experience. This is what makes Stadium Tennis special.
One of our favorite programs at this club is the doubles round robin program. We heard that this started because Andy kept hearing from clients that they wanted to compete so he started the doubles program on Friday nights where anyone could come and play no matter their level. He would and still does, personally, put together the teams so that matches are competitive. To this day, this doubles program is going strong with opportunities to participate on Tuesday and Friday night. What makes this fun is that the players vary from week to week so you can sign up when you are available without having to commit to a set number of weeks in advance.
If you need another reason to go to Stadium Tennis, Andy grew up in Switzerland so actually knows someone who has a 2-0 winning record against Federer. Yes, this was when they were juniors but the record stands. Besides that Andy is one of the nicest tennis directors and coaches we have met who is a big part of why Stadium Tennis is such a unique special place to play tennis in NYC. Hope to see you there sometime.
