Wimbledon judges will be replaced 

Did anyone read the FT article yesterday Wimbledon line judges to be replaced with Hawk-Eye Technology?  It was only a matter of time. 

Wimbledon, the world’s oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament, is preparing to say goodbye to a tradition that has stood since 1877. Starting in 2025, nearly 300 line judges will be replaced by automated line-calling technology. This marks a significant break from Wimbledon’s deep-rooted customs and traditions, where line judges have been a visible and essential part of the game for more than a century.

This shift comes as Wimbledon follows in the footsteps of other major tournaments. The Australian Open became the first Grand Slam to remove line judges in 2021, and the US Open followed suit in 2022. The ATP Tour is also slated to switch to electronic line-calling by 2025.

Understandably, their removal, is driven by desire for maximum accuracy, ensuring that the game keeps up with technological advancements. 

Chair umpires will remain, but the tournament will lose a bit of its human touch. Even in a sport rooted in tradition, change is inevitable. The players will now face the same conditions they’ve seen at the Australian and US Open, but for fans, the absence of the line judges and their iconic Polo uniforms will leave a quiet void.
