WHAT'S SO SPECIAL ABOUT RED CLAY COURTS ?
RCTA, which stands for Riverside Clay Tennis Association is a special place for those of us who play there. Is it the red clay, the stunning views of Hudson, the lush green grass or the incredible sense of community? From the moment you sign up for the courts you feel at home. It's easy, stress-free and friendly.
The courts are located by 96 street and Riverside drive and you can book them Online for extra 15$ or by walking up to the courts with a valid tennis permit. To secure a court on for peak hours, you need to walk up to courts early - around 7 am.
As a non-profit organization RCTA, operates independently, maintaining and managing the red clay courts in Riverside Park. They raise funds through membership, donations and sponsorships.
Founded in 1984, RCTA began as a lobbying group to prevent the New York City Parks Department from paving over the neglected public clay courts in Riverside Park. A group of dedicated players, mostly senior citizens, persuaded the City to keep the clay courts in exchange for helping with maintenance and fundraising. By 1990, thanks to volunteers and hundreds of hours of work, the courts were transformed from brown-green clay to true red clay using volunteers and hundreds of hours of work.
Over time, RCTA has grown and now employs staff funded by membership dues, sponsorships and donations. You can choose from variety of group lessons, ladders, children's classes and tournaments throughout the summer. Ladder is a fantastic way to engage into competitive games. Tournaments is another way to play more, improve your skills and meet new people. Check the schedule of all tournaments.
On summer Saturdays enjoy free concerts hosted by RCTA, watch sunset and picnic with friends. The ambiance is magic.
Membership is just 60$ a year, which supports a great cause and allows you to participate in ladders and tournaments. Support RCTA so that we can continue enjoying these beautiful red clay courts.
Looking forward to sharing a glass of rose by the courts next week. We will be at the entrance on the benches.
