AD-IN Summer Doubles Round Robin and Party at Columbia
Two weeks ago, when the heat reached a scorching 90 degrees and it was impossible to set a foot on a tennis court, I had a meeting scheduled at the new Tennis Center at Columbia on 218th Street. The goal was to discuss tennis activities for our AD-IN members.
Like any New Yorker, I initially had reservations about the distance and the commute. To my surprise, it was just a 20-minute subway ride from 96th Street on the 1 train, followed by a short walk. As I entered the Philip & Cheryl Milstein Family Tennis Center, I was amazed.
The facility is brand new and state-of-the-art, featuring six indoor and six outdoor hard courts. It is easily accessible by the 1 and A trains and offers free parking. Especially during the 90-degree heat outside, the pristine and well-maintained indoor courts were incredibly inviting. The locker rooms are brand new, the reception area had many seating places and a court viewing balconies to watch games.
We then headed to the roof to check out the outdoor courts, and my excitement only grew. The rooftop terrace adjacent to the courts is perfect for breaks between games or post-game hangouts.
On July 27th, the Milstein Center is opening its doors to AD-IN members for a two-hour round-robin doubles play, followed by pizza and drinks. Twenty-four players will be matched according to their skill levels and will rotate to experience different games. After the game and pizza we will head to the Inwood Farms, a very cool bar only 2 min walk away for more socializing. RSVP fast as the spots will fill up quickly.
For those who want to start socializing early, a group will be taking the subway together from 96th Street on the 1 train, details of which will be coordinated with registered players. This is a rain or shine event, in case of a bad weather, we will play indoors.
This will be a special Saturday evening to celebrate summer, tennis and new friendships.
Happy 4th of July !
