Stereotypical Barbie
I recently saw the Barbie movie. I had not wanted to see it but heard good things. I am so glad I went as the movie is hilarious. My friend and I were the loudest ones laughing in the theater.
Besides being a comedy focused on women’s empowerment and diversity, the movie also seems to show us that perfection, such as stereotypical Barbie, isn’t real or realistic.
There is a great speech made by America Ferrera’s character about what it is like to be a woman that almost perfectly describes the challenges we females face. Here is the first part of it.
“It is literally impossible to be a woman. You are so beautiful, and so smart, and it kills me that you don’t think you’re good enough. Like, we have to always be extraordinary, but somehow we are always doing it wrong.”
Did you know that fifty years ago Billie Jean King founded the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) to fight for equal pay? She even threatened to boycott the US Open until pay was equalized. We want to applaud her for all she has done for empowering professional female tennis players.
We also want to acknowledge the women, both tennis and non-tennis players who are part of the AD-IN community. Thank you for all that you do on and off the tennis court.
Our gathering next week is dedicated to women, but men are welcome to join, of course.
