Do you ever watch kids hitting tennis balls and think, "If only I started that young"? I would've loved to skip those endless hours perfecting each stroke as an adult as well as taking endless lessons.
Tennis isn't only about quick reflexes and powerful serves, it is also great for developing a strategic mind. Kids who start playing early gain improved coordination, agility and mental focus - skills that are cultivated over years of play.
For children, tennis is also a great way to learn about sportsmanship, discipline and resilience. It's not only about competition it's about forming friendships and passion for the game that often lasts a lifetime. Plus, playing tennis can open doors to scholarships later in life.
The girl on the photos is my niece who I signed up for tennis classes shortly after she started walking. The later photo is from our trip to the Nadal Academy in Mallorca last year, when she was impressively holding her game against some of the strong adults in the camp.
To train more kids in tennis, we have teamed up with Tennis Point NYC and will have kids classes starting this fall. There is a hidden court inside Millennium UN Plaza hotel just across the street from the United Nations - this is where kids will play. We start with those who are 6-8 year olds and have separate group for 12-14. We will also have drinks get together in the nearby bar for parents who are waiting.
Nik, who's the Executive Director of TennisPointNYC is one of the best coaches in NYC has developed this program. He is dynamic, fun and is known for creating an incredible energy and atmosphere on the courts both for kids and adults.
